 Stem Cell Research in the service of human life? : Ethical and Theological Reflection

The “Project on Faith, Science, Technology and Ethics”, World Council of Churches, (Geneva), in association with Volos Academy for Theological Studies, (Volos), has organized a Global Consultation to be held November 9-11, 2009 with the title: “Stem Cell Research in the service of human life? : Ethical and Theological Reflection”.In the Consultation will take part about 40 participants (scientists, medical doctors, theologians and ethicists) from all over the world, from various Christian and other traditions (e.g. Islam), which have been involved in some way in issues relating to stem cell research. Special attention has been given to including youth delegates. Project consultant on behalf the Volos Academy for Theological Studies is Dr. Vassilios Fanaras.

There are three main objectives of the Consultation:

  1. Remembering the past: The project on “Faith, science, technology and ethics” is a follow-up of the Conference on Faith, science and the future that was held in 1979 (MIT, USA). It was organised by the unit of “Church and Society” of the World Council of Churches and strengthened the churches’ ability to respond to many ethical issues posed by modern technologies and sciences at that time. Thirty years later new technologies have emerged, particularly in the area of human genetics, raising new challenges and ethical dilemmas. In this context, the present theological reflection intends to recommit ourselves to these bioethical struggles in the light of our historical legacy starting from 1979.
  2. Engaging with present: The “Faith, Science, Technology and Ethics” project focuses mainly on stem cell research this year. It was one of the small group topics discussed at the 2007 Global Consultation (Johannesburg). By focussing on the specific field of stem cell research it is hoped that fundamental theological ethical principles regarding genetic technologies will emerge. Beginning with stem cell research, the ultimate goal is to empower churches to actively engage in these issues with both their promises and problems, in solidarity with people at the grassroots level.
  3. Charting the future:  This consultation will address the importance of churches actively engaging in bioethical issues and will guide their future actions.
The consultation approaches the issue through three methodological stages:
  1. Understanding the science: Ccompetent scientists will present the scientific advancements as well ethical concerns associated with stem cell research of relevance to scientists. Grasping the basic science will help demystify the facts for theologians and ethicists and alert them to future scientific possibilities and applications.
  2. Discerning the ethical issues: The second day of the reflection will be dedicated to finding and addressing such ethical issues associated with stem cell research from different contexts and religious perspectives.
  3. Responding theologically: Pastors, theologians and leaders of other faiths are called on to speak out, counsel and advice about ethical concerns associated with scientific research and its applications. The consultation report will be published with selected writings and deliberation which is the outcome of the consultation to disseminate the knowledge globally with humanity. An ethics blog will be opened from Jan 1st, 2010.  This will be a place of information sharing and networking to promote joint work in this world to address the great challenges of our times. 

Υπάρχουν τρεις κύριοι στόχοι της Διάσκεψης:
  1. Ανάμνηση του παρελθόντος: Το πρόγραμμα  «Πίστη, Επιστήμη, Τεχνολογία και Ηθική» αποτελεί συνέχεια της Διάσκεψης σχετικά με την πίστη, την επιστήμη και το μέλλον που έγινε το 1979 (MIT, ΗΠΑ). Οργανώθηκε από την επιροπή «Εκκλησία και Κοινωνία» του Παγκόσμιου Συμβούλιου των Εκκλησιών και ενίσχυσε τη δυνατότητα των εκκλησιών να ανταποκριθούν σε πολλά ηθικά ζητήματα που τέθηκαν τότε από τις σύγχρονες τεχνολογίες και τις επιστήμες. Τριάντα χρόνια αργότερα, νέες τεχνολογίες έχουν αναπτυχθεί στον τομέα της ανθρώπινης γενετικής, προκαλώντας νέες προκλήσεις και διλήματα. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, ο παρών θεολογικός προβληματισμός επιχειρεί να τοποθετηθεί απέναντι στις προσπάθειες της βιοηθικής, στο φως της ιστορικής κληρονομιάς που άρχισε το 1979.
  2. Ενασχόληση με το παρόν: Το πρόγραμμα «Πίστη, Επιστήμη, Τεχνολογία και Ηθική» εστιάζει φέτος κυρίως στην έρευνα των βλαστοκυττάρων. Αυτό ήταν ένα από τα θέματα που συζητήθηκαν στην Παγκόσμια Διάσκεψη του 2007 (Γιοχάνεσμπουργκ). Εστιάζοντας στον ειδικό τομέα της έρευνας των βλαστοκυττάρων αναμένεται ότι θα προκύψουν θεμελιώδεις θεολογικές-ηθικές αρχές σχετικά με τις γενετικές τεχνολογίες, οι οποίες στη συνέχεια μπορούν να αξιοποιηθούν και σε άλλους τομείς της έρευνας και των εφαρμογών της γενετικής. Αρχίζοντας με την έρευνα των βλαστοκυττάρων, σκοπός είναι να παρακινηθούν οι εκκλησίες να συμμετάσχουν ενεργά σ’ αυτά τα ζητήματα στο επίπεδο της καθημερινής ζωής.
  3. Σχεδιάζοντας το μέλλον: Η Διάσκεψη θα εξετάσει τη σπουδαιότητα της ενεργούς συμμετοχής των Εκκλησιών σε ζητήματα βιοηθικής και θα βοηθήσει τις μελλοντικές ενέργειές τους πάνω σε αυτά τα θέματα.
   Η Διάσκεψη θα προσεγγίσει το ζήτημα σε 3 μεθοδολογικά στάδια:  
  1. Κατανοώντας την επιστήμη: Εξειδικευμένοι επιστήμονες θα παρουσιάσουν την εξέλιξη της έρευνας των βλαστοκυττάρων και τα ηθικά διλήμματα. Κατανοώντας τη βασική επιστημονική γνώση θα καταστεί δυνατή η απομυθοποίηση των γεγονότων, ώστε να μπορέσουν οι θεολόγοι και όσοι ασχολούνται με τα θέματα ηθικής να ενεργοποιηθούν σε μελλοντικές επιστημονικές δυνατότητες και εφαρμογές. 
  2. Διακρίνοντας τα ηθικά ζητημάτα: Η δεύτερη ημέρα της Διάσκεψης θα αφιερωθεί στην εύρεση και αντιμετώπιση ηθικών ζητημάτων που συνδέονται με την έρευνα των βλαστοκυττάρων μέσα από διαφορετικά πλαίσια και θρησκευτικές αντιλήψεις.
  3. Απαντώντας θεολογικά: Οι ιερείς, οι ποιμένες, οι θεολόγοι και οι ηγέτες άλλων θρησκευτικών πίστεων καλούνται να διατυπώσουν ανοικτά τις απόψεις τους και να ενημερωθούν για τις ηθικές ανησυχίες που συνδέονται με την επιστημονική έρευνα και τις εφαρμογές της. 
Το ανακοινωθέν της Διάσκεψης θα δημοσιευθεί μαζί με επιλεγμένα κείμενα και τη συζήτηση, με σκοπό η γνώση να διαδοθεί σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο.

Από την 1η Ιανουαρίου 2010 θα λειτουργήσει ένα blog για την ηθική, που θα αποτελεί τόπο διαδικτυακής ενημέρωσης και ανταλλαγής πληροφοριών για την προωθήση της συλλογικής εργασίας στον κόσμο και για  την αντιμετωπίση των μεγάλων σύγχρονων προκλήσεων.
