Statement by Metropolitan Ignatios of Demetrias Regarding Anti-Semitism |

Racism
and anti-Semitism, regardless of where and from whom they originate,
do not express the faith and consciousness of the Church. In fact, at
this time of year, we Orthodox Christians are reminded that our Lord
Jesus Christ was born a Jew. Furthermore, no one is entitled to
insult the memory of the six million innocent victims of the
Holocaust. From the manger of the God-Man Who was humbly born in
Bethlehem rose hope and light, not fear nor plotting against anyone.
The timeless conscience of the Church is expressed by the example of
great hierarchs, such as Archbishop Damaskinos, Metropolitan
Chrysostomos of Zakynthos, and our ever-memorable predecessor
Metropolitan Joachim, each of whom, in his own way, out of genuine
Christian sentiment, helped save thousands of Greek Jews. This is the
tradition of the Greek Orthodox Church; this is the tradition that we
follow.
