Orthodoxy and Political Theology PDF Print E-mail
acadimia_logo.jpgOpen Discussion - Workshopb_armos.jpg

Saturday, 9 April 2011
Time: 10:00 AM, Bookstore "Armos", Athens

From Carl Schmitt’s authoritarian- and conservative-inspired structural analogy between theology and law, theology and politics, and miracles and emergency powers, to the manifestation and application today of the political dimensions of the Gospel and the socially liberating elements of the Christian faith introduced by Johan Baptist Metz, Jügern Moltmann, Dororthee Soelle, as well as Latin American liberation theology (Gustavo Gutiérrez, Leonardo Boff, Camilo Torres, Archbishops Dom Helder Camara and Oscar Romero, Bishop Antonio Fragoso, Fr Jon Sobrino, Fr Ernesto Cardenal, et al.), what ultimately constitutes the core of political theology? Is there a "political theology" of Byzantium? What is the "political theology" of the Church Fathers and contemporary Orthodox theologians? Why, with very few exceptions, has Orthodoxy not developed a “political theology,” in the radical and liberating sense of the term? For what reasons has the trend known as the “theological left” or the “Christian left” not developed on Orthodox soil? Is the denunciation of wealth, personal property, usury, and economic exploitation sufficient grounds to speak about a “political theology” or a “liberation theology” in the Fathers of the Church?

The main speaker in this workshop will be Dr Pantelis Kalaïtzidis, Director of the Academy for Theological Studies, Lecturer at the University of Thessaly, and Visiting Professor at the Orthodox Theological Institute of St. Sergius in Paris, while the roundtable discussion to follow will include short presentations by:
- Thanos Lipovatz, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Panteion University
- Elias Papayiannopoulos, Assistant Professor of Political Philosophy, University of Piraeus
- Dimitris Moschos, Lecturer in the Department of Theology, University of Athens

A discussion with the audience will follow. Admission is free.

The Volos Academy’s Conference on Panayiotis Trembelas in Athens PDF Print E-mail
koino.jpgThe first conference in the series “Theological Portraits,” dedicated to “Panayiotis Trembelas: Between Tradition and Renewal, Between Academia and Mission,” velestinou.jpgmet with great success. The conference, which took place in the E.S.I.E.A. amphitheater in Athens, was attended and addressed by His Eminence Metropolitan of Velestinos Damaskinos—representing His Beatitude Ieronymos, Archbishop of Athens and All Greece—, as well as by His Eminence Metropolitan of Demetrias Ignatios.

In his opening remarks, Metropolitan Damaskinos, after conveying the blessings of the Archbishop, referenced the importance of the dimitriados.jpgwork of P. Trembelas. Metropolitan Ignatios then briefly outlined the main approaches and events to be held by the Volos Academy for Theological Studies, asproulis.jpgwhile noting the need for a substantial yet critical study of the works of the great contemporary Greek theologians.
Finally, Nikolaos Asproulis, a member of the Academy’s academic team, described the main thrusts of the conference in his short introductory speech.

Program of the Academic Year 2010-2011 - THEOLOGY, POLITICS & CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES PDF Print E-mail
volos english_page_01.jpg    Orthodoxy as an ecclesial community has from its beginning been conscious of living and moving in the world, but not being a product of this world (in the world but not of the world). Its eschatological and Eucharistic nature has always attributed to its identity a paradoxical character. Likewise today, Orthodoxy seems to be once more at a crossroads, having to confront various challenges that rise sharply before it.
Throughout its history, Eastern Christianity, even though marked by the tension between “the empire and the desert”, often chose to be dragged behind the chariot of the empire or state authority (eg. Byzantium, Tsarist Russia, Ottoman Empire, Balkan national states). In doing so, it drew closely alongside many forms of power, often authoritarian and undemocratic, whose spirit and ethos could hardly be in harmony with the Gospel and its principles. This is why fundamental achievements of modern civilization –such as human rights, political liberalism and the demands of democracy, social justice and respect of otherness– appear still to sit uneasily in traditionally Orthodox environments. In these contexts, the Church and its theology continue to be fascinated by the nostalgic recollection of premodern models of shaping and organizing society.
