On Saturday, April 28, 2012, Dr Pantelis Kalaitzidis, Director of the Volos Academy for Theological Studies, was received by His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew at the Phanar. Dr Kalaitzidis conveyed to the Patriarch the Paschal greetings of His Eminence Metropolitan Ignatius of Demetrias and expressed his joy at being able to visit once again the venerable Ecumenical Patriarchate, which is taking up its cross in ministering to both intra-Orthodox unity and the ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue, as well as the call for global understanding and reconciliation.
Dr Kalaitzidis informed the Ecumenical Patriarch on the objectives of the new edited series “Doxa & Praxis: Exploring Orthodox Theology,” a publishing project of WCC Publications and the Volos Academy for Theological Studies, which aims to highlight the vitality and timeliness of Orthodox thought at the ecumenical level. He also asked the Ecumenical Patriarch’s prayers and blessings for this new venture. Dr Kalaitzidis presented His All-Holiness with the first two volumes of the new publishing series for this new venture, which has an ecumenical scope and mission: the book by His Eminence Metropolitan of Diokleia Kallistos Ware, the former Spalding Lecturer at Oxford University, entitled Orthodox Theology in the Twenty-first Century, and Dr Kalaitzidis’ own work, Orthodoxy and Political Theology. The Ecumenical Patriarch congratulated the Volos Academy on this new initiative, blessed it, and wished that God grant every success and blessing to the theological work that this edited series hopes to accomplish in both the intra-Orthodox and ecumenical milieux.

|
At
the invitation of His Eminence Metropolitan of Mount Lebanon Georges
(Khodr), Dr Pantelis Kalaitzidis, the Director of the Volos Academy
for Theological Studies, visited Lebanon during the Bright Week
immediately following Easter (April 17-22). Dr Kalaitzidis had the
opportunity to visit Metropolitan Georges at the headquarters of his
Metropolis in the small town of Brumana on the outskirts of Beirut,
and to learn there about the life and work of the Orthodox Church in
this region, as well as its problems and challenges. Dr Kalaitzidis
conveyed to Metropolitan Georges the warm Easter greetings of His
Eminence Metropolitan Ignatius of Demetrias and briefed him on the
recent activities and programs of the Volos Academy for Theological
Studies. He also presented to him the latest issue of the journal The

Ecclesiology and Nationalism in a Postmodern Era |
|
|
|
|
International Conference with simultaneous translation in Greek/English
Religious nationalism seems to be the most serious problem that the Orthodox Church—and Orthodox ecclesiology especially—have faced since the fall of Byzantium (1453), a decisive historical event which began a period of introversion. Specific but very significant aspects of this problem are the identification between Church and nation, Church and ethno-cultural identity, Church and national ideology, Church and state, and, consequently, the concept —but also the reality— of national Churches, i.e. the inability to conceive of the Orthodox Church and its mission and witness in the world independently from the national vision and particular national idea or story. As a result of this replacement of the ecclesial criterion with the national, the Orthodox Church has been facing for many decades now a profound division between the different national Churches as well as the acceptance of the problematic ecclesiological idea that sees the Orthodox Church as a “confederation of national Churches”.
